Guernsey Carving
Comments OffAmerican Soldiers in Iraq
Comments OffThis painting is the largest and most ambitious I’ve ever attempted. The image is based on a photograph by Martin Adler, a war reporter who travelled extensively in Africa and Asia and was killed in Somalia in 2006. Although primarily a journalist and camera-man, his photography is also inspiring.
Martin’s photography agency Panos Pictures has a comprehensive library of his work: http://tinyurl.com/32cejdq
A documentary has recently been made of Martin’s life and works: www.martinadlerdocumentary.com
Samuel Hampton (2010) American Soldiers in Iraq. 36″ x 24″, Oil on Canvas

Its hard to show scale in this online gallery, so the image below helps to show the size of this painting.
Winter Road
Comments OffA road in winter in the south lake district. I painted this on a warm August afternoon – bit of a strange feeling painting such a wintry scene! This painting is a little larger than those I’ve done recently, about 18″x12″. Its the first oil painting I’ve done in a while.
Winter Road. Oil on canvas, 18″x12″. £100.

Comments OffMeranti Globe Lamp
Comments OffI carved this lamp for my sister for Christmas 2009 out of Meranti. It’s a hardwood in the mahogany family, with a very strong grain and produces a musty smell when you carve it. I love maps, so enjoyed carving the world into a globe shape for the middle. As the picture shows, I fed the wire for the lamp through the middle (I used a very large masonry drill bit) and borrowed a lamp fitting and shade from one of my mum’s bedside lamps! It is finished with a tinted varnish.
Tree in summer
Comments OffThis is a painting I did when I was eleven years old. It is of the tree outside the flat where I lived with my Mum and Step-father. I clearly decided it would be best to paint the railings of our balcony first, and worry about the background later. I do think it makes for an interesting image though, even now!
