I carved this lamp for my sister for Christmas 2009 out of Meranti. It’s a hardwood in the mahogany family, with a very strong grain and produces a musty smell when you carve it. I love maps, so enjoyed carving the world into a globe shape for the middle. As the picture shows, I fed the wire for the lamp through the middle (I used a very large masonry drill bit) and borrowed a lamp fitting and shade from one of my mum’s bedside lamps! It is finished with a tinted varnish.
